Welcome to Class 2 – Years 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1)
The transition from Reception to Year 1 is a big step, however by working together, we aim to make this as easy and enjoyable as possible for all involved. The biggest change the children will notice is that they will spend less time on free choice activities and play. The children will see more defined lessons and need to sit down at their tables to complete their learning both in the morning and afternoon.
Each morning begins with reading time and is followed by phonics, literacy and maths. The afternoons cover the wider curriculum in which subjects such as: Geography, History, RE, Science, ICT and Art and Design are taught through the current topics.
- Spellings and timetable practise are set on a weekly basis.
- Daily reading is essential for developing early literacy skills.
- A topic based project is set every term – this gives children the opportunity to explore the current topics in their own creative ways.
(Occasionally PE slots need to be moved around to fit alongside the wider curriculum, therefore we suggest that children have PE kit available in school all week)
