We aim to provide pupils with the language, concepts and skills of mathematics, and to engender a positive attitude towards the subject in order that they acquire:

  • Essential skills in numeracy
  • An ability to relate maths to problem-solving situations.
  • A broad understanding of math and its application and value in everyday society.

The school follows the National Curriculum. There is a strong emphasis on mental calculation strategies throughout the school, and children are encouraged to use those that best suit their individual learning styles. Methods of recording work develop progressively according to the age and maturity of the child. Formal methods are introduced after the child has grasped the concepts taught. Teachers endeavour to use the mathematical skills and understanding of pupils in other areas of the curriculum where possible.
